SAS is now using ISC's PennNet Mailing List Service as our mailing list solution. Due to University policy, SAS mailing lists are now required to have an email confirmation sent to the sender so that they can confirm that they are sending to the list and not being spoofed by a malicious party. SAS LSPs are working with groups.sas.upenn.edu list owners to migrate existing lists to the PennNet Mailing List Service. You can find answers to common questions about managing your PennNet Mailing List Service lists below:
PennNet Mailing List Service Migration FAQ
Why is the mailing list system changing?
Due to University policy, SAS mailing lists are now required to have an email confirmation sent to the sender so that they can confirm that they are sending to the list and not being spoofed by a malicious party. Our previous system, Mailman, run on groups.sas.upenn.edu, was not equipped to handle this feature. To comply with the policy, existing lists on groups.sas.upenn.edu are to be migrated to the PennNet Mailing List Service. The migration will be coordinated by each group's Local Support Provider.
What happens to my existing lists during migration?
For lists migrating to the PennNet Mailing List Service, list information will be exported from the Mailman system and imported into the PennNet Mailing List service with the existing membership, settings, and functionality in place. LSPs will assist you through the migration process. Lists will first be migrated to a development server so that list settings and configurations can be reviewed. Lists are then migrated to the PennNet Mailing List Service.
Will the list address I message change?
Yes, List addresses will be updated during the migration process. Since the PennNet Mailing List Service is used University wide, lists are preferred to be identified with a School based prefix. In SAS, lists on the PennNet Mailing List Service are required to be prefixed with sas-. Newly created lists will have this added automatically.
The list address domain will also now be @lists.upenn.edu rather than the previous @groups.sas.upenn.edu.
My list has an alias, will that still work after migrating?
Yes, aliases will be updated post migration to deliver to the new @lists.upenn.edu address. This change will be coordinated with your Local Support Provider.
What happens once my lists have been migrated?
Once lists have migrated to the PennNet Mailing List Service, list owners can start messaging the new list addresses. Mailman lists will be kept active for a period of time and will then be deleted by your Local Support Provider, completing the migration.
