Export contacts
- In Thunderbird, go to Tools and select Address Book
- Select the address book you want to export. (The Personal Address Book is the default.)
- Click Tools from the menu and select Export.
- Save the file to your desktop
- Name the file: TBcontacts
- Change “Save as Type” to Comma Separated (*.csv)
- Click Save
Fix your exported contacts
Before you can bring your Thunderbird contacts into Office 365 you’ll need to replace the header row of your TBcontacts.csv file.
- Right-click this link, HeadersForImport.csv, and select “Save target as…” or “Save link as…”. Save the file to your desktop.
- Open HeadersForImport.csv from your desktop
- Click on the number 1 to the left of the first row to select it
- Do a Ctrl-C to copy this row
- Open TBcontacts.csv from your desktop. The file should open in Excel.
- Click on the number 1 to the left of the first row to select it
- Do a Ctrl-V to paste the copied row over the top
- Delete any rows for contacts you no longer need.
- Fill in any missing information for the First Name, Last Name and E-mail Display Name fields.
- Save the file.
- Click the Yes button when asked "Do you want to keep the workbook in the format?"
- Close the file.
- Click the Don't Save button when asked "Do you want to save the changes you made to 'yourfilename.csv'?"
Import the exported address book into Office 365
- Log into your Office 365 account
- Click on the gear to the right of your name and choose "Options"
- If not already there, select "account"
- Under "shortcuts to other things you can do" on the right side of the screen, click on the bottom link that says "Import your contacts from an existing email account"
- The "import contacts" window should open
- Click “Choose File”: Navigate to the CSV file you saved to your desktop
- Click the next button to import your contacts
- You should see a message that says that your contacts were successfully imported and the number of contacts imported.
- Click the finish button
- To see your imported contacts select People from the top menu, and select My Contacts in the left pane
Note: Only individual contacts can be imported into Office 365. Groups of contacts must be manually re-created in Office 365.
