Printing from personal laptops to the printer in the Fels computer lab is possible. You can print directly from your laptop to the printer located in the computer lab, in Fels. To do so, a piece of software called a "printer package" must be downloaded and installed. There is no other way to connect to the printer. All printing is free of charge, but requires that users submitting jobs release them from the adjacent release station. A PennCard is required to release any print job.
Download the Printer Package Software from Box
Printer packages for both Apple computers and computers running Microsoft Windows can be downloaded from the following URL.
https://upenn.box.com/v/felslab-printer
Install the Printer Package
Double-click the downloaded package file (DMG for Mac, EXE for Windows) and follow the instructions in the resulting dialog boxes, choosing all of the default options. On macOS, the package will create a printer called "Fels Pharos Printer" in the Printers & Scanners section of System Preferences. Windows computers will get a printer called "Fels Lab Printer."
Submit a print job to the printer
As usual, print the desired file to the Fels printer (titles above). Once submitted, the printer package's software, "Popup", will run, prompting for information which will be used to identify your print job in the release station's queue. Do not use your PennKey password with your print job. NOTE - The Fels Pharos printer defaults to duplex printing for all jobs. If this is not appropriate, opt to print single-sided in your application's print dialog.
Release the job
Once the job has been sent, go to the Pharos release station and swipe your Penn card in the reader. This will unlock the station and display the current print queue. Click on your job and enter the password you created in the popup dialog on your computer. Shortly, the printer will print the job.
