Students can configure their personal Gmail account to send as their SAS email address.
Google requires authentication for the email account that you wish to send as. The authentication used for setting up a send as address would be an App Password, generated from your 2 Step Verification enabled Google@SAS account. An App Password is a 16-digit passcode that gives a non-Google app or device permission to access your Google Account. App Passwords can only be used with accounts that have 2-Step Verification turned on.
The steps you need to take for establishing this authentication will depend on whether or not you have already set up a Google@SAS account.
If you DO NOT already have a Google@SAS account,
You will need to create a Google@SAS account in order to authenticate the Send As address. You don't have to use the account to handle your email, but you do need it in order to authenticate.
To establish your Google@SAS account:
1. Go to: https://apps.sas.upenn.edu/rso/email
Select to have your messages sent to your Google@SAS account and create a password. You will then be prompted to log into the account.
2. Once the password is created and you have logged into the account, you will then want to set your account to forward messages back to your personal Gmail account by revisiting: https://apps.sas.upenn.edu/rso/email and setting your forwarding destination to your personal Gmail account. Forwarding may take up to twenty minutes to be activated.
3. Once your forwarding is set to go to your personal Gmail account, you can then follow the steps below to configure your Send As address for your SAS account.
If you DO already have a Google@SAS account,
In your Google@SAS Account:
Make sure that your Google@SAS account is setup for 2 Step Verification. To enable 2 Step Verification on your Google@SAS account you can go here.
Once 2 Step Verification is enabled on your Google@SAS account you will then want to select the nine squares in the top right of your page and then select Account.
On the Account page, select Security from the left hand pane and then select App Passwords from the Signing into Google section.
To create a new App Password to use for configuring your Send as address select Custom from the Select App dropdown menu and name the password, Send as SAS address, and click Generate.
This will present you with your App Password in an orange box that will be used to authenticate the Send as configuration in your personal Gmail account. Highlight the password and copy it to your clipboard by pressing command+c on a Mac or control+c on Windows.
In your Personal Gmail Account:
In your personal Gmail account, go to the Settings gear (at the upper right) and choose Settings from the menu.
Then choose the Accounts and Imports tab, then Send mail as > Add another account you own. You will want to enter your name and your full SAS email address, uncheck the box marked Treat as an alias and click the Next Step button.
You will want to use the Gmail SMTP server (smtp.gmail.com). The username is your full SAS email address and your password would be the App Password that was just created. Paste the App Password into the password field by pressing pressing command+v on a Mac or control+v on Windows. Click the Add Account button, and Gmail will send you a verification message to the email account at which you recieve your messages.
In the email, click the confirmation link and on the page that opens click Confirm. This will take you back to your Inbox, refresh the page and you will now be able to select your SAS address when composing new messages.
